ADRIAN KENYON, ARTIST: IT’S BETTER TO BURN OUT THAN TO FADE AWAY
The dragon seen falling into the lake of oil is taken from a fresco in The Vatican “The vision of the cross” by Raphaello. Emperor Constantine introduced the cross to the then Pagan Roman church on the eve of a military victory over Maxentius; a pivotal moment in the conversion of Rome to Christianity. The dragon is the Pagan symbol for Rome! Interestingly St. John makes several references to the dragon, at one point saying that “it gives it’s authority to the 7 headed beast” Dragons are littered throughout the Vatican: see lower right image for more.
